Obama makes two nominations for the District of South Carolina
South Carolina: President Obama made two nominations to the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina on December 22, 2009. They are South Carolina Circuit Courts Judge J. Michelle Childs and Columbia attorney Richard Mark Gergel.
President Obama said of the nominations: "Throughout their careers, Michelle Childs and Richard Gergel have displayed exceptional integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice. They will be esteemed additions to the federal bench for the people of South Carolina. I am grateful for their dedication to public service." [1]
Fourth circuit judge announces retirement
South Carolina: Federal judge Karen J. Williams announced her retirement from the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to President Obama due to her diagnosis of the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Judge Williams was 57 years old at the time of the diagnosis. William Traxler will become the new chief judge of the Fourth Circuit.
In an interview with the Washington Post Judge Williams' daughter Marian Scalise, said that her mother made a wrenching decision to leave a job she loves but did so promptly after her diagnosis to make sure she retired before any of her opinions could be questioned. "The court has always been in her life. She has always loved the court, and serving the citizens, and making sure her opinions were correct as far as the law is concerned. It's so difficult for her to step away from that". [1]
SC judge banned from bench after racial comment
(7/29/08) A South Carolina judge who admitted calling crack cocaine addiction "black man's disease" has been banned from the bench, the state's Supreme Court said in an order Monday. Former Beaufort County Magistrate George Peter Lamb, who is white, agreed to the punishment and resigned before the order was issued. The court's order included no other details about the comment.
