District judge nominees approved by Senate Judiciary Committee
South Dakota and West Virginia: Two of President Obama's nominees for United States district courts have been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Irene Berger was unanimously approved for a vacancy on the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. If she is approved by the full Senate, Berger would be the first black federal judge in West Virginia. [1] Also, Roberto Lange was approved by the Judiciary Committee for a seat on the District of South Dakota. [2]
Both of the candidates were nominated by Barack Obama in July of 2009. [3] A date for the full Senate to vote whether to confirm these nominations has not yet been set.
State attorney general appointed to circuit court
South Dakota: The attorney general of South Dakota, Larry Long, has been appointed by Governor Rounds to the second judicial circuit, which serves Lincoln and Minnehaha counties. The state 2009 Legislature approved an additional judgeship in the second district, and there was also a vacancy on the court due to the appointment of Glen A. Severson to the South Dakota Supreme Court. Long was one of 11 candidates recommended to the Governor by the South Dakota Judicial Qualifications Commission.
Long will resign from his post as attorney general and that vacancy will be filled later, also by gubernatorial appointment. He said: "I am delighted and honored at the Governor’s appointment, and I will do my best to justify the Governor’s confidence in me". [1]
District of South Dakota nominations made
South Dakota: Roberto Lange and Jeffrey Viken have been nominated by President Obama to serve on the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota. Lange and Viken were recommended to the President by Senator Tim Johnson. [1]
The two openings on the court are to fill the seats of Lawrence Piersol of Sioux Falls and Charles Kornmann of Aberdeen, who have assumed senior status. [2]
