Stanley Matthews (1824-1889) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1881 after an appointment from James Garfield. At the time of appointment, he was a U.S. Senator from Ohio. He served the Supreme Court until his death on March 22, 1889.[1]

Judicial career

Supreme Court of the United States

He was nominated by President James Garfield on March 14, 1881 to fill the vacancy left by Noah Haynes Swayne. He was confirmed by the Senate on May 12, 1881 and received commission that same day. He served until his death on March 22, 1889.[1] He was succeeded to this post by David Josiah Brewer.
