Stefan R. Underhill is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He joined the court in 1999 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. At the time of appointment, he was a private practice attorney in Connecticut.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, Underhill graduated from University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in 1978 and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford-England, earning a second bachelor's degree in 1981. Underhill earned his Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1984.[1]

Professional career

Underhill was a private practice attorney in Stamford, Connecticut in 1984 before serving as a law clerk for Federal Appeals Judge, Jon Newman, in the United State's Second Circuit Court of Appeals from 1984 to 1985. Underhill resumed private practice until 1999.[1]

Judicial career

District of Connecticut

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Christopher Dodd and Joe Libermann, Underhill was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut by President Bill Clinton on January 26, 1999 to a seat vacated by Peter Dorsey. Underhill was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 30, 1999 on a majority voice vote and received commission on July 7, 1999.[1][2]
