Georgia: Federal appellate judge Susan Black has sent a notice to President Obama, informing him of her desire to retire to senior status. Black said she will continue hearing a full caseload until a successor is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. She said, "I think it's important for me to continue doing that. "I'm healthy. I love the work." [1]

Black was appointed to the court in 1992, after serving on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida since 1979. Before her time on the federal bench, Black was a judge on the Duval County Court and Fourth Circuit Court in the state. [1]

Judge Black's semi-retirement creates a bit more pressure for the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. In August 2010, Stanley Birch retired from the court and a successor is yet to be named. Now the president has two vacancies to fill in the Eleventh Circuit. [1]
