Terri Love has been a judge on the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal since her election in September of 2000. In 2004, she was reelected to the court, to a term expiring on December 31, 2014.[1][2]
Biography
Love graduated from Jackson State University in 1983 with a B.A. in political science. Three years later, she earned her J.D. from Tulane University School of Law. In 2004, she received a Master of Laws degree from the University of Virginia. Judge Love has completed the New York University School of Law's Institute for Appellate Judges. In 2007, Judge Love was selected to attend the International Judicial Academy, where she studied international law in The Hague, Netherlands.
Judge Love is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Foundation, and the National Bar Association. She was appointed to serve on the board of the American Bar Association's Judicial Division Appellate Judges Conference. She serves as the co-coordinator of the Minority Judicial Clerkship Program. She is an active lecturer in various continuing legal education programs, and has served as a Trial Advocacy Instructor at the Louisiana State University School of Law. She has also acted as an adjunct professor at Miles College Law School.
In May 2004, Judge Love was bestowed with the prestigious Ernest N. Morial Judicial Pacesetter Award, presented by the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society. Judge Love is a member of the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society, the American Judges Association, the New Orleans Bar Association Inn of Court, and the National Association of Women Judges.
Judge Love and her husband, Ellria, have two children.[1]
Career
In 1990, Judge Love established a private practice, specializing in family law. In 1993, she was appointed Judge Ad Hoc by the judges of the Juvenile Court of Orleans Parish. The following year, she was appointed by Mayor Marc Morial to the position of Chief Deputy City Attorney for the City of New Orleans. During that appointment, Love was the lead author of the city's first domestic violence ordinance. In October 1995, Judge Love was elected to the Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans (41st Judicial District, Louisiana). In September 2000, Judge Love was elected to the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal. In August 2004, she was reelected to serve a ten-year term.[3]
