Thomas E. Hoffman was born Dec. 23, 1947, in Chicago. He currently serves on the Illinois First District Appellate Court.

Biography

Judge Hoffman was educated at Loyola University (B.B.A., 1969) and the John Marshall Law School (J.D., 1971).

Legal career

Judge Hoffman served as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago from 1971 to 1976 before entering private practice.

Judge Hoffman was appointed an associate judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, 1984, elected a Circuit Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1988, assigned to service in the First Appellate District in 1993, and elected an Appellate Judge of the First Appellate District in 1994 where he presently serves in the 4th Division.

Committees and Awards

Judge Hoffman is a member of the executive committee of the Illinois Judicial Conference and serves as a trustee and vice chairman of the Judges' Retirement Board. He received the John Marshall Law School's "Distinguished Alumni" award in 1988 and was president of the school's alumni association in 1996. Judge Hoffman is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, Justinian Society of Lawyers and the Chicago Inn of Court.

In 1998, Judge Hoffman was the subject of some controvery surrounding a request for investigation filed by the group Citizens for Legal Responsibility. In the complaint, Citizens for Legal Responsibility accused Judge Hoffman of "willful misconduct in office, persistent failure to perform his duties, and other conduct that is prejudicial to the administration of justice and that brings both his judicial office and the entire Illinois judiciary into public disrepute."[1]
