Thomas Anderton Wiseman, Jr. is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. He joined the court in 1978 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. He is currently serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native of Tennessee, Wiseman graduated from Vanderbilt University with both his Bachelors Degree in 1952 and his juris doctoral degree in 1954. After graduating from law school in 1954, Wiseman served in the US Army until 1956. Wiseman later graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law with his Master of Laws Degree in 1990. [1]
Professional career
From 1956 to 1971, Wiseman served in Private practice in Tulaahoma and Winchester, TN. In addition to his private practice work, Wiseman served as a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1964 to 1968 and left private practice to become the State Treasurer of Tennessee from 1971 to 1974. Before his appointment to the Federal Bench, Wiseman served again in Private practice in Nashville from 1974 to 1978.
After his appointment to the Federal bench, Wiseman is still a Adjunct faculty at the Vanderbilt University Law School a post he has served since 1989 and has also served as a Special Master for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals from 1992 to 1993. [1]
Judicial career
Middle District of Tennessee
On the recommendation of Senator James Sasser, Wiseman was nominated by Jimmy Carter on August 1, 1978, to a seat vacated by Frank Gray as Gray went on senior status. Wiseman was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1978 on a Senate Vote and received commission on August 11, 1978. Wiseman has served as the chief judge of the court from 1984 to 1991 before assuming senior status on November 3, 1995. [1] Wiseman was succeeded in this position by Todd Campbell.
