U.W. Clemon was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. [1] He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. He retired on January 31, 2009.

Early life and education

A native of Alabama, Clemon graduated from Miles College with his Bachelor's Degree in 1965 and later graduated from Columbia Law School with his Juris Doctor degree in 1968. [1]

Professional career

Clemon spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Alabama from 1969 to 1980. Clemon was also a member of the Alabama State Senate as a Democrat from 1975 to 1980. [1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Alabama

Clemon was nominated to the Northern District of Alabama by President Jimmy Carter on January 10, 1980 to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Clemon was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 26, 1980 on a Senate vote and received commission on June 30, 1980. Clemon served as the chief judge of the court from 1999 to 2006. He retired in 2009. [1] Clemon was succeeded in this position by Abdul Kallon.

Judicial pay dispute

Clemon is one of eight judges pressing a claim that Congress has violated the Constitution's compensation clause by failing to honor promised judicial salary increases in five separate years. The case was thrown out on October 16, 2009, but the group of judges are appealing it to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. [2]
