United States Circuit Court for the District of West Virginia
The United States Circuit Court for the District of West Virginia was established on February 6, 1889, some 25 years after West Virginia broke off from the state of Virginia and was admitted into the Union as such. Prior to this division, the united Virginia had an Eastern and a Western judicial district, and their respective Eastern and Western circuit courts. The division between these Eastern and Western judicial districts was conformed to the geographical division between Virginia and West Virginia, and the former District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia became the District Court for the District of Virginia, and the District Court for the Western District of Virginia became the District Court for the District of West Virginia. This last then retained the same original jurisdiction as circuit courts normally had until the fore-mentioned date of February 6, 1889. The Circuit Court for the District of West Virginia was then abolished on January 22, 1901, with the division of West Virginia into Northern and Southern judicial districts and their corresponding Northern and Southern circuit courts[1].
