The United States Circuit Court for the Northern District of Georgia was established on June 4, 1872. Since 1848, when Georgia was first divided into Northern and Southern judicial districts, the District Court for the Northern District of Georgia had been given circuit court jurisdiction, but this defect was rectified with the creation of the separate Circuit Court for the Northern District in 1872. This court served the Northern District of Georgia until the abolition of the circuit court system on March 3, 1911[1].
