The United States District Court for the District of Illinois was created by Congress in 1819, with one judgeship authorized for the district[1]. Illinois continued as one judicial district until 1855, when Congress divided the state into Northern and Southern Districts, with one judgeship authorized for each[1]. Thomas Drummond, the judge of the District of Illinois at this point, was transferred to the Northern District[2].
