The United States District Court for the District of Wisconsin was created by Congress in 1848[1]. In 1870, Wisconsin was divided into Eastern and Western Districts, which it retains to this day[1]. Andrew Galbraith Miller was the sole judge of the court during its entire 22-year life, and after the division, he served for another 3 years on the Eastern District[1],[2].
