This page is about a former federal court. For a list of active courts, see: United States federal courts.

The United States District Court for the Eastern District of New Jersey was created by Congress as part of the Judiciary Act of 1801[1], which divided New Jersey, formerly under a single District, into Eastern and Western Districts. This Act was repealed less than a year later, with a different president and a new majority in Congress, thereby reuniting New Jersey as a single judicial district, which it has retained ever since[1]. During the year from 1801-1802, the Eastern and Western Districts retained a single judgeship between them, and that seat was filled by Robert Morris[2].
