United States District Court for the Western District of New Jersey

The United States District Court for the Western District of New Jersey was created by Congress as part of the Judiciary Act of 1801[1], which divided New Jersey, formerly under a single District, into Eastern and Western Districts. This Act was repealed less than a year later, with a different president and a new majority in Congress, thereby reuniting New Jersey as a single judicial district, which it has retained ever since[1]. During the year from 1801-1802, the Eastern and Western Districts retained a single judgeship between them, and that seat was filled by Robert Morris[2].
