Family Court judge plans to retire

Vermont: Judge Ben Joseph, of the Grand Isle County and Franklin County Vermont Family Courts, has announced his plans to retire in June of 2010. He served as a Vermont judge for 12 years.[1]


New Vermont federal judge sworn in

Rutland, Vermont: Christina Reiss, the new federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Vermont, was formally sworn in on January 7, 2010. The ceremony took place at the federal courthouse in Rutland where a packed courtroom witnessed Vermont's first female federal judge's swearing in.

Reiss takes over for Garvan Murtha who took senior status. She was nominated to the court by President Obama.

The Chief Judge of the court, William Sessions, administered the oath to Reiss and Reiss donned her new robe which is custom of a judicial swearing in ceremony. [1]



State judge nominated for federal judgeship

Vermont: State judge for the Vermont Superior Courts and the Vermont District Courts Christina Reiss has been nominated by President Obama to a lifetime seat on the District of Vermont. If confirmed by the Senate, Reiss would take the seat vacated by Garvan Murtha when he assumed senior status. She would be the first woman to serve the District of Vermont federal court. [1][2] Reiss was recommended to President Obama by Senator Leahy. [3]

Reiss earned her Bachelor’s degree from St. Michael’s College in Vermont and her law degree from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1989. After her graduation from law school, Judge Reiss served as law clerk for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. After that, Reiss was in private practice specializing in several areas including media, land use, business, employment and federal criminal law until her 2004 appointment to the Vermont State judiciary. Reiss has three children from 7 to 18. Her father is the late St. Michael’s professor John Reiss. John Reiss was the victim of a fatal shooting at his home Essex, VT when an apparently stray target practice bullet killed him. [5]


Recommendation made for District of Vermont

Vermont: State district judge Christina Reiss was recommended to President Obama for a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Vermont by Senator Patrick Leahy. The Vermont Judicial Nominating Commission vetted eight finalists in the application process, and of them, selected Reiss for recommendation. [1]

If nominated by Obama and confirmed by the Senate, she would fill the seat vacated by Garvan Murtha when he assumed senior status. She would be the first woman to serve on the federal District of Vermont court. [2]
