Contents

Only judges of the Probate Courts and Assistant judges participate in judicial elections in Vermont.

Primary election

Those candidates compete in partisan elections. The winners of the party primaries advance to the general election.

Results

Results are posted on the Vermont Secretary of State website. The office waits one full week after the election before posting results.

Elections

Other courts

All other judges are screened by the Vermont Judicial Nominating Commission, chosen via gubernatorial appointment and confirmed by the Vermont Senate. At the end of their terms, justices and judges stand for retention elections in the Vermont State Legislature.

Similar systems, with some variations, are utilized in Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.
