Judges in Virginia are elected by the members of the state General Assembly. Virginia is one of only two states (the other being South Carolina) that use this legislative election method. Vacancies that occur when the legislature is not in session are filled by gubernatorial appointment, though appointees must face election when the legislature reconvenes.
Virginia does not hold any popular elections for judges.
