Virginia General Assembly re-elects 8 judges
Virginia: The Virginia General Assembly re-elected to following judges on January 27th:
- Cynthia Kinser to the Supreme Court of Virginia.
- William Broadhurst to the Roanoke County Circuit Court
- Charlie Dorsey to the Roanoke County Circuit Court
- Colin Gibb to the Giles Circuit Court
- Harold Black to the Bedford District Court
- Gordon Saunders to the Lexington/Rockbridge District Court
- Randal Duncan to the Wythe District Court[1]
Circuit judge Mosby retires
Virginia: J. Leyburn Mosby, Jr. retired from the Lynchburg Circuit Court on January 28, 2010. He had served full-time on this court since 2001. He plans to continue to serve as a fill-in judge when needed.[1]
Virginia federal judge to retire
Virginia: Judge Glen Williams announced that he will retire from the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia on February 1, 2010. He has served on senior status on this court since 1988. [1]
27th Judicial Circuit judge announces retirement
Virginia: Judge Ray Wilson Grubbs announced that he will not seek a second term on the Virginia 27th Judicial Circuit. He will retire when his current term ends in March of 2010.[1]
Partial birth abortion ban upheld
Virginia: The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit issued a 6-5 ruling to uphold Virginia's strict ban on partial birth abortion on June 25, 2009. The Virginia ban is similar to the federal ban on partial birth abortion.
The decision followed a previous ruling from a three-judge panel of the Fourth Circuit which struck down the law as unconstitutional. Former Virginia Attorney General and 2009 gubernatorial Bob McDonnell requested a re-hearing by all the active judges on the court. [1].
