Walter McGovern is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. He joined the court in 1971 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon.
Early life and education
A native of Washington State, McGovern graduated from the University of Washington, with his Bachelor's Degree in 1949 and with his law degree in 1950.
Professional career
McGovern served nine years as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Washington from 1950 to 1959 before having a long career as a sitting judge. McGovern first became a Municipal Court Judge in the Seattle Municipal Court from 1959 to 1965. McGovern also served as a Superior Court Judge in the King County Superior Court from 1965 to 1968. McGovern also served as a Justice in the Washington Supreme Court from 1968 to 1971.
Judicial career

McGovern was nominated by President Richard Nixon on March 29, 1971 to a seat vacated by William Lindberg as Lindberg assumed senior status.[1] McGovern was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 21, 1971 on a Senate vote and received commission on April 23, 1971. McGovern served as the chief judge of the court from 1975 to 1987 before later assuming senior status on September 30, 1987. McGovern was succeeded in this position by Thomas Zilly.
