Walter Scott Smith, Jr. is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. He joined the court in 1984 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Smith served as the Chief Judge of the Court until June 1, 2010 after meeting the maximum tenure of seven years. He was succeeded by Samuel Biery.[1]
Early life and education
Born in Marlin, Texas, Smith graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas with his Bachelor's Degree in 1964 and with his Juris Doctor degree in 1966. [2]
Professional career
From 1966 to 1980, Smith was a private practice attorney in the State of Texas. Smith served as a Judge in the District Court for the 54th District Court based in McLennan County, Texas from 1980 to 1983.[2] [3]
Judicial career
Western District of Texas
Smith was a Federal Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas from 1983 to 1984.[2]
On the recommendation of Texas U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Smith was nominated to the Western District of Texas by President Ronald Reagan on September 11, 1984 to a new seat created by 98 Stat. 333, which was approved by Congress. Smith was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 3, 1984 and received commission on October 4, 1984. Smith has been the Chief Judge of the Court since 2003. [2]
