New Federal Judges
Since John Shabaz announced his intentions to go on senior status, right now a Federal Nominating Commission has been activated to help find a replacement for the Western District of Wisconsin. The commission's goal is to make the recommendation to U.S. Senators Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl on who to nominate to the bench.
On March 20, 2009, Judge Crabb announced her intentions to go on senior status claiming that the courts caseload is increasing and taking into account the economic situation in the United States that it would be more responsible with taxpayer dollars for her to go on senior status than to rather have Congress approve a third judgeship which is an option[1].
On March 30, 2009, the Wisconsin State Bar Federal Nominating Commission named four finalists out of thirteen applicants to replace John Shabaz. The four finalists that have been given to U.S. Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold are Former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice Louis Butler, La Crosse County Circuit Court Judge Ramona Gonzalez, and Madison Area attorneys William Conley and Stephen Meyer, [2] with Butler ultimately receiving both a recommendation from Sens. Kohl and Feingold and a nomination from President Barack Obama.[3][4] However, Butler's nomination was not approved by the Senate. [5]
Also, on March 24, 2009, the current Clerk of Court Peter Oppeneer has been appointed by the Judicial Conference of the Seventh Circuit as a new part-time Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin.
