Wilfred Feinberg (b. 1920) is a federal appeals judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit based in New York City. He joined the court in 1966 after being nominated by President Lyndon Johnson. At the time of appointment, Feinberg served on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the district court in 1962 after an appointment from John F. Kennedy Feinberg assumed senior status on January 31, 1991. [1]

Early life and education

Feinberg graduated from Columbia-New York with his Bachelor's Degree in 1942 and with his law degree in 1946.[1]

Military career

Feinberg served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945.[1]

Professional career

Feinberg began his legal career as a law clerk for federal judge James McGranery for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1947 to 1949 before becoming a private practice attorney practicing in New York City from 1949 to 1961 and also served as a deputy superintendent for the New York Department of Banks in 1958.[1]

Judicial career

Second Circuit Court of Appeals

Feinberg was nominated by President Lyndon Johnson on January 19, 1966, to a seat vacated by Thurgood Marshall as Marshall was nominated to the Supreme Court of the United States. Feinberg was confirmed by the Senate on March 4, 1966 on a senate vote and received commission on March 7, 1966. Feinberg served as the chief judge of the court from 1980 to 1988 before later assuming senior status on January 31, 1991.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Dennis Jacobs.

Southern District of New York

Feinberg received a recess appointment from President John F. Kennedy on October 5, 1961 to a new seat created by 75 Stat. 80 which was approved by Congress. Feinberg was re-nominated by President Kennedy on January 15, 1962. Feinberg was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 16, 1962 on a senate vote and received commission on March 17, 1962. Feinberg left the Southern District of New York on March 7, 1966, due to his appointment to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Milton Pollack.
