William S. Duffey, Jr. is a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He was nominated to the court by President George W. Bush in 2003. Prior to his appointment, Duffey was a U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1952, Duffey graduated from Drake University with his bachelor's degree in 1973 and later from University of South Carolina Law School with his J.D. degree in 1977.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Georgia

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, Duffey was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia by President George W. Bush on November 5, 2003 to a seat vacated by Owen Forrester. Duffey was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 16, 2004 on a Senate vote and received commission on July 1, 2004.[3]

Notable cases

Montemayor sentenced to 22 years

  United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia
In October 2013, Judge Duffey sentenced Juan Ubaldo Montemayor, a major player in the organization of drug boss Edgar "La Barbie" Valdez, to almost 22 years in prison. He was arrested in San Antonio, Texas in 2012, following an arrest in Mexico in 2010. Montemayor was tried in the Georgia court after trafficking more than 3,000 pounds of cocaine to Atlanta.[4]
