William T. Lawrence (b.1947) is an Article III Federal Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

Early life and education

Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Lawrence graduated from Indiana University with his Bachelor's degree in 1970 and also graduated from Indiana University School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1973. [1]

Professional career

Lawrence was a private practice attorney in the State of Indiana from 1973 to 1997. In addition to his private practice work, Lawrence served as a Public Defender for the Marion County, Indiana Superior Court from 1974 to 1983. Lawrence also served as Master commissioner of the Marion County Circuit Court from 1983 to 1997 before becoming a Judge of the Marion County Circuit Court from 1997 to 2002. [1]

Judicial career

Lawrence was a Federal Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Indiana from 2002 to 2008.[1]

Southern District Court of Indiana

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Dick Lugar, Lawrence was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana by President George W. Bush on February 14, 2008 to a seat vacated by John Tinder as Tinder was elevated to a judgeship on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Lawrence was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 26, 2008 on a Senate vote and received commission on June 30, 2008.[2]
