William Nealon

William Nealon is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He is serving on senior status.

Nealon was nominated to the federal bench in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. He is one of 125 judges nominated to the federal bench by President Kennedy and as of July 2009, is one of four "Kennedy judges" still serving in the federal judiciary.

Early life and education

A native of Pennsylvania, Nealon graduated from Villanova University with his Bachelor's Degree in 1947 and later graduated from the Catholic University of America School of Law with his Law Degree in 1950. Nealon also served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a First Lieutenant from 1942 to 1945.

Legal career

Nealon was a Private practice attorney licensed in the State of Pennsylvania from 1951 to 1960. Nealon also was a part-time lecturer at the University of Scranton from 1951 to 1959 and a Hearing examiner for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board from 1955 to 1959. Before becoming a federal judge, Nealson served in the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas from 1960 to 1962.

Federal judicial career

Nealon received a recess appointment from President John Kennedy on December 13, 1962 to a seat vacated by John Murphy as Murphy assumed senior status. Nealon was nominated on January 15, 1963 and Confirmed by the Senate on March 15, 1963 on a senate vote and received his commission on March 27, 1963. Nealon served as the chief judge of the court from 1976 to 1989 before later assuming senior status on January 1, 1989.
