William D. Quarles, Jr. is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Early life and education
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Quarles earned his Associate Degree from the Community College of Baltimore in 1967 before graduating from the University of Maryland-College Park with his Bachelor's Degree in 1976. Quarles received his Juris Doctor degree from Catholic University of America in 1979. [1]
Professional career
Quarles was a law clerk for former federal judge Joseph Howard in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland from 1979 to 1981 before entering private practice in Maryland until 1982. Quarles served a Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland in the the U.S. Attorney's Office from 1982 to 1986. Quarles returned to private practice until 1996 before becoming an Associate Circuit Court Judge for the Circuit Court for the City of Baltimore, Maryland from 1996 to 2003. [1]

Quarles was nominated to United States District Court for the District of Maryland by President George W. Bush on January 7, 2003 to a seat vacated by William Nickerson. Quarles was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 12, 2003 on a Senate vote and received commission on March 14, 2003. [2].
