William Henry Stafford, Jr. is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida. He joined the court in 1975 after being nominated by President Gerald Ford. Stafford is serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native of Ohio, Stafford graduated from Temple University with his Bachelor's Degree in 1953 and with his juris doctorate degree in 1956. Stafford served as a US Navy Lieutenant on active duty from 1956 to 1960.
Professional career
Stafford started his legal career as a private practice in the State of Florida from 1961 to 1969 and also served as a part-time Assistant city attorney for the City of Pensacola in 1963. In 1967, Stafford was appointed a part-time State's attorney in Florida's First Judicial Circuit until 1969. In 1969, Stafford was nominated by President Richard Nixon as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida and served in that role until his appointment to the federal bench in 1975.

Stafford was nominated by President Gerald Ford on April 18, 1975 to a seat vacated by David Middlebrooks as Middlebrooks went on senior status. Stafford was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 12, 1975 on a senate vote and received commission on May 14, 1975. Stafford served as chief judge of the court as the lead administrative officer from 1981 to 1993.[1] Stafford assumed senior status on May 31, 1996. Stafford was succeeded in this position by Robert Hinkle.
