William Byrd Traxler, Jr. (b. 1948) is the chief judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Traxler assumed the position of chief judge in July of 2009 due to the sudden illness and subsequent retirement from the court of Karen J. Williams.
Early life and education
Traxler graduated from Davidson College with his Bachelor's Degree in 1970 and later graduated from the South Carolina Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1973. Traxler also served as a U.S. Army Reserve Adjutant General from 1970 to 1978. [1]

Judicial career
Fourth Circuit
Traxler was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the Fourth Circuit on July 10, 1998, to a seat vacated by Donald Russell as Russell died in judicial service. Traxler was confirmed by the Senate on September 28, 1998 on majority voice vote and received commission on October 1, 1998. [1] [2]
District of South Carolina
On the recommendation of Senator Strom Thurmond, Traxler was nominated by President George Bush on November 14, 1991 to a seat on the District of South Carolina vacated by Clyde Hamilton as Hamilton was elevated. Traxler was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 27, 1992 on unanimous consent of the Senate and received commission on March 2, 1992. Traxler left the District of South Carolina on October 21, 1998, due to his appointment to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
