Charles E. Freeman is a judge on the Illinois Supreme Court from the first judicial district of Illinois. He was elected to his position on the court on November 6, 1990, becoming its first African-American justice. He served as chief justice from May 12, 1997 to January 1, 2000.
Justices of the Illinois Supreme Court are elected to serve ten-year terms in partisan elections. Fitzgerald serves as a Democrat. He was re-elected in 2010 to a term that expires in 2020.[1]
Education
Freeman graduated from Virginia Union University in 1954 and earned his J.D. in 1962 from the John Marshall Law School (Chicago).[2]
Professional career
Freeman's legal career began 1962, in general practice. In 1965, he was appointed to the Illinois Industrial Commission by Governor Otto Kerner, Jr. He served in this capacity until he joined the Illinois Commerce Commission in 1973. Freeman's first served as a judge on the Cook County Circuit Court, a position he held from 1976-1986. Next, he was elected to the Illinois Appellate Court. He served on this court until he was elected to the Supreme Court in 1990.[2]
Freeman now ranks as the senior member of the Illinois Supreme Court after his re-election in November of 2002.[3] While on the court he has shown particular interest in administrative reform and prosecutorial misconduct cases.

Charles Freeman was retained with 78.31% of the vote to a new term on the First District of the Illinois Supreme Court.[1][4]

The Chicago Sun Times "unenthusiastically" endorse Kilbride for Freeman to another term. [5]
Freeman has been recommended for retention by the Judicial Performance Commission of Cook County. [6]
