This page is about policies on Judgepedia about appropriate (and inappropriate) user names. Your user name is the name you choose when you register to edit on Judgepedia.

User names on Judgepedia shouldn't:

  • Be inflammatory, provocative, rude or use profanity.
  • Replicate the name of a commercial product
  • Be the name of an organization.

Names of judges and judicial candidates

Judges, and candidates for the judiciary, are of course welcome to edit Judgepedia and to do so using a user name that is identical or substantially similar to their real name.

However, the fact that a user can sign up on Judgepedia with the name of a judge or a judicial candidate, even if they are not that judge or judicial candidate, leads to a potential for abuse. The potential for abuse is if that user makes edits on Judgepedia that a reasonable person might construe as having been made by the actual judge or judicial candidate. Even if the edits are not in-and-of-themselves edits that might reflect badly on the judge, it isn't acceptable to create an editing history that looks like it might have been made by that actual judge or judicial candidate.

As a result, Judgepedia's policy is that when someone does register using the name of a judge, the user will be notified about this policy on his or her talk page and will be asked to send an email to Judgepedia's staff within 72 hours confirming that they are that judge or judicial candidate.
