A WikiProject is a collection of pages devoted to the management of a specific topic or family of topics within Judgepedia.

WikiProjects are not places to write articles about courts and judges directly, but are a resource to help coordinate and organize the writing and editing of those articles.

The purpose of WikiProjects is the management, administration and editor support of the process of article creation, editing and completion.

A WikiProject is a central place for editor collaboration on a particular topic area. A project may:

  • Develop editorial standards for articles in the project.
  • Keep track of work that needs to be done.
  • Act as a meeting place or forum where editors of articles in the project can discuss issues of interest.
  • Foster a sense of cohesiveness among a group of editors working towards a common goal.

Guide to creating WikiProjects

Before you begin

  • Check to see if there is already a similar project.
  • Check to see if there is a project about a subject that your project will be a part of. That larger project would be described as a "parent project". For example, if you are starting a project about "Intermediate appellate state courts", a project about "state courts" would be a parent project to yours.
  • Decide on the scope of your project. Is it too small or too large?

Finding other editors

  • Try leaving notes on the talk pages of users you think might help you with your project.

Creating a template

  • It helps if you create a WikiProject template. You and other project editors can then put this template on the talk page of any article that falls into your category. The template tells readers of the article that the article belongs to a particular project, and invites their assistance.
  • Note that an article can be in more than one project. An article about the Alaska Supreme Court could belong to a WikiProject about the Alaska courts, as well as to a WikiProject about state supreme courts.

WikiProjects and portals

You may wonder about the relationship between a Judgepedia:Portal and a WikiProject. A portal combines article content with elements of WikiProjects. A portal introduces a reader to the content available within a particular portal. (You might think of a portal as a book; the introductory page for the portal is like a book's Table of Contents) and also invites other editors to join the portal's associated WikiProject if there is an associated WikiProject. There can be a portal without an associated WikiProject and vice versa.
