Seamus McCaffery is an associate justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He was first elected to the court as a Democrat in a partisan election in 2007; his current term expires in 2017.
Biography
McCaffery is an immigrant who was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1950. When he was 5, Seamus immigrated to America with his parents and siblings, and the family settled in Philadelphia. [1]
Education
McCaffery received his B.A. from LaSalle University in 1977 and his J.D. from Temple University School of Law in 1989. [2]
Military service
McCaffery joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968. He stayed on active duty until 1985, when he entered reserve duty. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 2008 as a Colonel. [3]
Career
After leaving active duty, McCaffrey joined the Philadelphia Police department, where he spent 20 years serving the citizenry of Philadelphia. He was elected judge of the Philadelphia Municipal Court in 1993. He became Administrative Judge of that court in 2001. Two years later, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Superior Court. He served in this capacity until his election to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 2007. [3]
Eagles Court
When he was a trial judge, McCaffrey created the Nuisance Night Court to deal with unruly fans during the Philadelphia Eagles football home games.[1]
