The United States District Court for the District of Michigan was established by Congress in 1836[1]. In 1863, Michigan was divided into Eastern and Western Districts, with independent judgeships, and Ross Wilkins, who had been the lone judge for the District of Michigan during the entire 27-year life of that court, was reassigned to the Eastern District[1],[2].
